Schaub visited the Under Armour Performance Center Tuesday afternoon and didn’t leave without signing a contract, despite reported interest from other teams (Jets, Falcons, Cowboys and Titans).
With Tyrod Taylor – Flacco’s backup for the past four seasons – departing for Buffalo via free agency, rising sophomore sixth-round pick Keith Wenning was in line to be the backup. He will now compete with Schaub, who is the Ravens’ most experienced backup since Marc Bulger in 2009.
Schaub has played 11 seasons, including two Pro Bowl years in 2009 and 2012, when he threw for 4,770 and 4,008 yards, respectively. His last 4,000-yard season came in 2012 with the Houston Texans, where he played under former Ravens Offensive Coordinator Gary Kubiak.
Schaub’s knowledge of Kubiak’s system, which will still be run in Baltimore despite Kubiak’s exit to Denver, is an added bonus. He will continue to help Flacco grow in the system.
Schaub’s final year in Houston was difficult, as he was replaced mid-year after struggling with interceptions and injuries. He had 14 picks and 10 touchdowns in eight starts.
Schaub was traded to the Oakland Raiders last offseason, but was beat out for the starting job by rookie Derek Carr and became a backup for the first time since 2006. He suited up for 11 games, attempted 10 passes and threw two interceptions.
